Mohammad Javad Zarif, the former Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, epitomizes the dark art of manipulation, deceit, and strategic machination. His career has been blight on both Iran’s domestic stability and international diplomacy. This essay delves into Zarif’s insidious background, his role in orchestrating pivotal events, his duplicitous use of diplomacy, and the urgent need for future U.S. administrations to treat him with the utmost skepticism and vigilance.

Zarif’s Background and Rise to Power

The enigmatic odyssey of Javad Zarif from a modest U.S. scholar to a potent diplomatic entity in Iran unfurls a turbulent tale rife with discord. Born in 1960, Zarif’s lineage ties back to the Hojatieh (a messianic cult) sect, a conventicler steeped in fundamentalist doctrines.  To truly understand Javad Zarif’s character, Americans enamored by his façade of charm should delve into his history and unearth his ties to the Hojjatieh—a radical anti-Baha’i sect featuring individuals with anti-Semitic inclinations.

Despite his radical origins, he secured a scholarship from the Shah’s government to study in the United States, an irony given his later allegiance to the Islamic Republic. Amidst the torment of the Iran-Iraq conflict, as Iranian lives perished in the crucible of war, Zarif luxuriated in the comforts of the United States—a choice that lays bare his hypocrisy and timidity, a scorn underscored by U.S. Senator Tom Cotton.

Diplomatic Deceptions and the JCPOA

Zarif is notorious for masterminding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal. He deceitfully marketed the JCPOA as a binding agreement with the United States to Iranians, while in reality; it was an international agreement without legal standing under U.S. law. The JCPOA, endorsed by U.N. Security Council resolution 2231, terminated previous resolutions that had censured Iran’s nuclear program under Chapter VII of the U.N. Charter. Zarif cunningly framed this as a diplomatic victory, normalizing Iran’s relations and attracting foreign investments. However, the supposed economic prosperity was a facade, ending abruptly with the U.S. withdrawal from the deal. Despite the lifting of sanctions by the Obama administration, the poverty rate in Iran skyrocketed, culminating in the largest uprising, spanning more than 100 cities in November 2017.

The Tragedy of the Ukrainian Passenger Plane

A despicable blot in Zarif’s regime tenure was the heinous downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This cold-blooded tragedy claimed all 176 souls, a crime initially cloaked in denials by the establishment only to be unraveled under relentless global pressure. Zarif’s hollow expressions of remorse bespoke a callous indifference, laying bare his complicity in this and other regime atrocities

The 2019 Massacre and Crimes Against Humanity

Zarif’s reign witnessed some of Iran’s bloodiest crackdowns to date. The November 2019 upheaval over fuel price spikes birthed widespread protests met with brutal state repression, culminating in between 1500 to 4000 lives lost in a span of less than 3 days amid a week-long internet blackout. Zarif, under the guise of a moderate international face, was complicit in this ruthless regime, endorsing bloodshed and tyranny. His refusal to acknowledge or atone for this massacre serves as a dark testament—a turning point poised to unravel the despotic regime

Insidious Diplomacy and the Path Forth

Zarif’s diplomatic ruse banks on portraying Iran as a rational player primed for dialogue—an artifice woven with historical grievances like the false narrative of 1953 overthrow of Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh to invoke Western guilt and sympathy. This mendacious narrative, coupled with promises of mutual benefit, serves as a veiled strategy to stall, deflect, and disorient the regime’s critics. Through President Masoud Pezeshkian, Supreme Leader Khamenei aims to sow discord between the U.S. and Europe on Iran, shield the IRGC from censure, revive the Iran Lobby, and resuscitate the ‘hardliner-versus-reformist’ dichotomy in the Western mindset.

Lessons for Future U.S. Administrations

As Iran faces renewed scrutiny and a looming specter of sanctions, Zarif lurks on the cusp of resurgence under president Pezeshkian’s mantle. Any forthcoming U.S. administration must approach this artful manipulator with extreme caution. Zarif’s legacy of duplicity,  and moral void calls for an unwavering and vigilant stance. Recognizing his true colors is pivotal to averting a recurrence of past diplomatic fiascos

Conclusion

Zarif’s career is a stark reminder of the perils of strategic deception in international relations. From his early days as a student in the U.S. to his role in the JCPOA and beyond, Zarif has consistently manipulated the global community to further the interests of the Iranian regime while presenting a facade of rationality and moderation. As Iran’s next moves unfold, the world must remain vigilant and skeptical of Zarif’s tactics. Only by understanding and exposing his true nature can the international community effectively counter his manipulative strategies and hold the Iranian regime accountable for its actions.
